Hangul syllable Syu

5769/11172

슈 is a Korean Hangul syllable, romanized syu and pronounced roughly like English “shoo”; on its own it has no fixed translation. In 슈퍼, it is the first syllable of the Korean word for a supermarket. A Korean IME builds it from ㅅ followed by ㅠ.

What 슈 means

It is a Korean syllable, not a word with a fixed meaning. In standard romanization it is syu, roughly like English “shoo.” Its meaning comes from the full Korean word around it: 슈퍼 means “supermarket.” Loanword spellings such as 슈미트 use 슈 to represent sound; the complete name or word carries the meaning.

In 슈미트 and 슈림프, 슈 is part of the Korean spelling of a name or loanword, not a separate definition.

Why does Hangul put letters in blocks?

Hangul groups sound letters into syllable blocks. The first record of Hunminjeongeum, the name of the new script, appears in the Sejong Sillok (the Annals of King Sejong) in 1443; an explanatory book of the same name followed in 1446. The record says King Sejong created letters for the written language of Joseon. The book’s preface explains the script’s purpose, and its commentary shows how letters are arranged in syllables.

The script was known early by names including Jeongeum, Eonmun and Banjeol. After the Gabo Reform of 1894, Gukmun and Gukseo became common names; by 1928, Hangul was widely used. Modern Korean spelling is based on a unified draft from 1933, partly revised in 1988.

How do I type 슈?

Use Korean input and enter ㅅ, then ㅠ. A Korean IME composes the sound letters into 슈. The standard Windows two-set keyboard assigns ㅠ to B; Microsoft’s Korean IME guide from 2024 describes the automatic block composition.

Unicode can store 슈 as one precomposed block or as two linked Korean sound letters called jamo, 슈. They may look alike, but software that compares text before normalization can distinguish their underlying sequences.

Neutral in Korean text; by itself, 슈 is a fragment unless its word supplies context.

Do not translate 슈 alone as “super”; 슈퍼 is the whole word for a supermarket.
