Hangul Syllable Teok

9545/11172

텈 is a Korean Hangul syllable block built from ㅌ ㅓ ㅋ; in a word, it contributes one syllable of sound. Sent alone, it is best read as Korean text or an input sample, with the message around it supplying the sender’s point. A Korean input method joins the three letters into one block, though fonts can draw that block with different proportions.

What 텈 means

It contributes one syllable of sound; the word supplies meaning. On a Korean keyboard, the component letters are ㅌ, ㅓ and ㅋ; together they make one syllable inside a Korean word. If someone sends 텈 alone, treat it as Korean text or an input sample and ask for context if needed.

Unicode stores it as one precomposed character and decomposes it into ᄐ ᅥ ᆿ. Fonts can draw the same character with different proportions; those are font differences, not new signs.

Where does 텈 fit in Hangul's history?

Hangul is Korean’s writing system; 텈 is one of its syllable blocks. Hangul developed across 1443–1446 to make Korean easier to write. The explanatory book Hunminjeongeum set out its letters and principles.

Because Korean and Chinese are different languages, earlier writing methods called Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to record Korean. Their complexity made these methods difficult to use widely.

In later periods, Hangul appeared in Buddhist and Confucian books, institutions, letters and everyday labels, extending into public writing.

How do I type 텈?

Enter ㅌ, ㅓ and ㅋ in a Korean input method. A Korean input method editor (IME) combines letters into Hangul syllables. On the standard Dubeolsik two-set layout for QWERTY keyboards, those keystrokes are x, j, z.

On a phone, choose a Korean keyboard and tap ㅌ, ㅓ, then ㅋ. If they stay separate, the keyboard is entering individual letters instead of composing a syllable.

Neutral written text; its role in a message depends on the Korean word or surrounding context.

Don’t mistake 텈 for 턱: 턱 means “chin” or “jaw” and ends in ㄱ, while 텈 ends in ㅋ.
