hangul syllable yalh

Hangul syllable Yalh

6540/11172

As of 2026, 얋 has no established standalone Korean word meaning; it is a Hangul syllable block built from ㅇ, ㅑ, and ㅀ. In a word, the final cluster—called batchim when it ends a syllable—changes with what follows, so “yalh” names the components rather than giving a reliable pronunciation.

What 얋 means

On its own, 얋 is a syllable block, not a Korean word with a settled meaning. It combines ㅇ as the initial, ㅑ as the vowel, and ㅀ as the final cluster. That cluster occupies the batchim, or syllable-ending position; “yalh” names the components, not a translation.

Hangul was created in 1443 to write Korean speech more directly; earlier writers borrowed Chinese characters, which fit Korean imperfectly. The 1446 book Hunminjeongeum, meaning “Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People,” explained the script’s principles. Hangul was used alongside Chinese-character writing before becoming Korea’s main script for Korean. A debated proposal links Hangul’s design to Phags-pa, a square script based on Tibetan and used for the Mongol Yuan court; this remains a hypothesis about the script, not a claim that 얋 descends from it.

How do I type 얋 with a Korean keyboard?

Use a standard Korean two-set layout; press d, i, f, g. On this layout, also called Dubeolsik, those keys enter ㅇ, ㅑ, ㄹ, and ㅎ; the Korean IME combines the last pair into ㅀ. Unicode also represents the syllable in the decomposed form 얋. That sequence and precomposed 얋 are canonically equivalent, though an app may show the jamo separately.

The Korean pronunciation of final ㅀ changes with the next sound: at a pause only ㄹ is heard; before a vowel, ㄹ carries into the next syllable and ㅎ drops; before ㄴ, ㅎ drops and ㄹ plus ㄴ sounds like ㄹㄹ; before ㄱ, ㄷ, or ㅈ, ㅎ gives the next consonant a breathier release. “Yalh” names the parts, not a reliable spoken form.

Neutral as a Hangul character; alone, it carries no built-in social tone.

If someone sends only 얋, ask for the surrounding Korean text; “yalh” is a component label, not a translation.

Why does 얋 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
