What 🦛 means
It means a hippopotamus, and it is sent far more fondly than rudely. People use 🦛 when they have seen one at the zoo, are planning a safari, are watching a nature documentary, or just find hippos funny: the huge yawning mouth, the tiny ears, the body that looks like a barrel with legs. It also stands in for the hippo-like moods of ordinary life: being so full you can only lie down, hogging the pool, or the sheer appetite of a "hungry hippo".
The real animal is worth a minute. The common hippopotamus lives in rivers and lakes across sub-Saharan Africa, spends the day half-submerged to keep cool, and comes out at night to graze on grass. Its name is Greek for "river horse", though it is nothing like a horse. It is among the largest land animals and, for all its round and sleepy look, one of the most dangerous in Africa: it is fast, hugely strong and fiercely territorial in the water. That gap between "adorable" and "will flip your boat" is part of why the emoji is so useful for jokes.
Since 2024 the hippo has had a second life online as a cuteness icon, thanks to Moo Deng, a pygmy hippo born at a zoo in Thailand whose bouncy, grumpy baby photos went around the world. Fan posts about her and about other zoo hippos use 🦛 as a heart would be used: pure adoration. If you see the emoji next to a baby-animal photo, that is the reading.
What does it mean when someone sends you 🦛?
Usually a joke about food, laziness or animals, not about you. "Just ate three plates 🦛" is self-mockery; "zoo tomorrow 🦛" is a plan; a 🦛 under a video of a hippo eating a watermelon is delight. Friends also use it as a nickname for someone who naps a lot or loves swimming, in which case it is affectionate and they will have used it before.
The one reading to watch for: a hippo aimed at a person's appearance. Sent alone under your photo, or after a comment about your weight, 🦛 works like or as a jab about being fat, and most people will take it that way. If you are the one sending, keep hippo jokes for real animals, your own appetite or a shared running gag. If you received one and the context is unclear, asking "hippo because…?" beats quietly stewing; more often than not the answer is a baby-hippo video.
Playful and warm in animal, food and holiday chat; it turns sharp the moment it is pointed at a real person's body.
Never send 🦛 as a bare reaction to someone's picture unless you are sure they will laugh.

6Worth knowing
- The hippo's closest living relatives are not pigs, as its looks suggest, but whales and dolphins; they share an ancestor that returned to the water tens of millions of years ago.
- Hippos were internet darlings before Moo Deng: Fiona, born six weeks early at Cincinnati Zoo in 2017, became a worldwide favourite the year before this emoji was added.
Questions people ask
3Is the hippo emoji an insult?
Not by default. In animal, food or holiday chat it is a joke or a compliment to a cute hippo. It becomes an insult only when aimed at someone's body or photo, where it reads as calling them fat.
Is there a pygmy hippo or Moo Deng emoji?
No. 🦛 is the only hippo emoji, so fans use it for pygmy hippos like Moo Deng too. The pygmy hippo is a separate, much smaller forest species from West Africa, but the emoji covers both.
Why do people say hippos are dangerous if they look so cute?
Because they are. Hippos are enormous, surprisingly fast and defend their stretch of river aggressively, and they are widely counted among the deadliest large animals in Africa. The emoji's sleepy look hides a very serious animal.
