What ⿁ means
It marks the ghost radical as a dictionary category.
The eighteenth-century Kangxi dictionary set out this system. The Han-era Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi grouped ghost entries by worship and fear; a 2021 study describes an earlier belief linking ghosts and gods before they were distinguished.

1Why does ⿁ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Kangxi Radicals block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
