Kangxi Radical Long

168/214

⾧ is the long radical symbol used to index Han characters, not an ordinary sentence character. Traditional Chinese and Japanese use 長; Korean Hanja also uses it, while simplified Chinese uses 长. Font support can affect its display.

What ⾧ means

Use ⾧ to label the long radical in an index.

Radicals are shared parts dictionaries use to group Han characters in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean references; remaining strokes narrow an entry.

長 appears in oracle-bone writing—early Chinese inscriptions on bones and shells—over 3,000 years ago, with meanings including length, growth, and seniority. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early dictionary, grouped characters by radicals around 100 CE; the Kangxi Dictionary established the familiar 214-radical set in 1716.

Technical notation for dictionary indexes.

Write 長 or 长 in text, not ⾧.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ⾧ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Kangxi Radicals block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
