What does the net radical do?
It is a dictionary key built from an old net drawing. The graph appears in Shang oracle-bone inscriptions—texts carved on animal bones and turtle shells—where it served as a verb for setting a net to catch birds or animals. The Han-era Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, describes a net made from knotted cord. The drawing changed through bronze writing and small-seal script, an older formal Chinese style.
The graph later became a radical, a recurring component used to group Chinese characters. The Kangxi dictionary, an eighteenth-century Chinese reference work, used it as a section key: readers looked up characters by that component, then by their remaining strokes.
This is a technical mark for Chinese character indexing, analysis, and typography, not an everyday written word.
Do not use ⽹ in ordinary Chinese text where 网 or 網 is intended.

Not every system ships a font for the Kangxi Radicals block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
