What ⾼ means
The category grew from an older character. Bronze inscriptions from the late Shang dynasty of ancient China show 高 as a layered, building-like form. Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, describes it as a tall tower.
The 214-radical index first appeared in the 1615 Zihui dictionary and was adopted by the Kangxi Dictionary in 1716. ⾼ is radical 189. As a word, 高 means “high” or “tall,” and can also describe rank or quality.
A reference symbol for dictionary indexing.
Use 高 for “high” as a word; ⾼ names the radical.
