Kangxi Radical Tree

75/214

⽊ is the tree radical, also called the wood radical, used as an index label for Han characters. Dictionaries group entries under it and then by remaining strokes; this filing tradition has a long Chinese history. It may look exactly like 木, but they have distinct character identities.

Text symbol

What ⽊ means

It labels the tree or wood radical in a character index.

In dictionaries, a radical is a key used to group Han characters for lookup. ⽊ corresponds to 木, the ordinary Han character associated with tree or wood. That label does not prove that every character filed under it comes from a tree.

Xu Shen’s Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, arranged characters under 540 section headers around the 2nd century CE. Mei Yingzuo’s Zihui reduced the set to 214 radicals and introduced lookup by radical plus remaining strokes in 1615. The Kangxi Dictionary adopted those 214 in 1716, giving the system its familiar name.

Why does ⽊ look like 木?

The shapes can match; the encoded characters remain distinct.

Unicode pairs ⽊ with 木 as a compatibility equivalent, so a font may draw them alike. Their character identities remain different, which can affect searching and text processing. The dedicated encoding serves reference use; it does not make the indexing role a modern invention.

Where does ⽊ appear?

In radical tables, dictionaries, and character references.

A Chinese character database groups entries under a 木 radical section. In Japan, the National Printing Bureau describes consulting the Kangxi Dictionary to locate and draw uncommon kanji for official publications. Modern systems can use different component schemes; a radical is a lookup key, not a universal account of a character’s origin.

Technical and reference-oriented: it signals a radical index, dictionary entry, or character chart.

For the ordinary Han character meaning tree or wood, use 木; ⽊ labels the radical.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ⽊ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Kangxi Radicals block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
