What ೧ means
The value is one; its outline changed over time. Kannada numerals grew from Brahmi, an ancient South Asian script. The Gudnapur pillar inscription in Karnataka, linked to Kadamba king Ravivarman, is dated to the early sixth century; a report says it shows all nine numerals. This does not establish that today's ೧ had the same outline.
An older survey of South Indian writing records Telugu–Canarese numerals in 1087 and says they were common about 1300. That was its label for a regional tradition. The Kannada word ಒಂದು means one. In ೧೦, its place gives ten; in ೧೧, the two digits make eleven. Using ೧ keeps the number in Kannada script.
