Kannada letter sha

ಶ represents Kannada’s “sh” sound, like the sound in English “ship”; by itself, it is read śa, with an inherent vowel. Kannada writing developed from Brahmi through Telugu-Kannada forms. From about the fifth century CE, Kannada inscriptions recorded public, religious, and administrative life.

It represents the “sh” sound. In English, the sound at the start of “ship” is a close guide. In transliteration, the bare letter is written śa: Kannada consonant letters carry an inherent vowel unless another sign changes it.

A halant suppresses that vowel when the letter joins another consonant. Kannada script shaping may then display the joined letters as a conjunct.

A neutral Kannada letter; on its own, it is not a reaction.

Keep ಶ distinct from ಷ and ಸ; they are different letters.
