What శ means
Some speakers merge the two sha sounds. శ is made with the tongue near the roof of the mouth; for ష, the tongue curls back. A 2026 acoustic study found most of its 16 Telugu speakers did not distinguish them; the pattern varied by word and context.
The script descends from Brahmi through an earlier Telugu–Kannada form. Sanskrit borrowing added these extra “sh” sounds. Early regional forms of this script appear in records from the 4th–7th centuries CE; a Telugu inscription from the 14th century shows sha with an angled stroke near the modern form.
In శ్ర, a virama (vowel-suppressing mark) removes శ’s default vowel before ర.
