What 𘬛 means
Its Unicode name identifies it; it does not translate it.
Logograms stand for words; phonograms represent sounds and cluster into words. The inscription shows a sign’s role.
When did Khitan small script begin?
Traditional accounts date it to about 925; surviving evidence is later.
Unicode credits Yelü Diela and says the script drew inspiration from Uyghur writing. A 2026 reassessment argues systematization came under Liao emperor Shengzong; the earliest securely dated surviving text is a 1051 epitaph. It wrote the Khitan language under Liao, Western Liao, and Jin rule, alongside Khitan Large Script; Jurchen writing adapted Khitan models.

Worth knowing
- Khitan columns ran top to bottom, from right to left; rendering clusters vertically or horizontally needs script-aware layout.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𘬛 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
