khitan small script character-18b43

Khitan Small Script Character-18B43

Khitan Small Script is a writing system for the Khitan language; a character's role depends on its place in a text. Created around 925 by Yelü Diela, the script served the Liao, Qara Khitai, and Jin dynasties, chiefly on tomb memorials. A 2017 chronology dates the oldest surviving tomb text to 1053. Tradition says it drew on Uyghur writing, though the scripts look quite different; Khitan writing also influenced Jurchen.

What 𘭃 means

No; it names the character, not a Khitan word or sound.

Unicode builds that label from the character's assigned number. Khitan Small Script has signs for whole words and signs for sounds. Sound signs usually form clusters—groups of two to eight characters that spell one word—set in vertical columns read from right to left.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘭃 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
