What 𘮈 means
No; it marks one sound within a word.
Khitan Small Script usually groups sound signs into clusters that form words, while some signs stand alone as whole words. The neighboring signs complete this character’s spelling.
How old is Khitan Small Script?
Traditional histories date it to about 925, but scholars debate that.
Those histories credit Liao prince Yelü Diela with creating it and report Uyghur influence, though the scripts look different. The earliest securely dated surviving example is a Wugulin Taishi tomb inscription from 1051; a 2026 study argues its practical use may have begun later. It continued under the Liao, Western Liao (Qara Khitai), and Jin dynasties. During the Jin dynasty, Jurchen writing also drew on Khitan models.
