Khitan Small Script Character 18B92

147/471

What 𘮒 means

The Unicode label identifies this Khitan glyph, not its translation.

Khitan Small Script combined signs for words with signs that spell sounds. Read 𘮒 in a Khitan text; the isolated glyph does not show which role it plays.

When did Khitan Small Script begin?

Its traditional creation date is disputed.

An official history of the Liao dynasty gives 924 or 925 as the small script's creation date; a 2026 study argues that practical use may have begun later. The Khitan Large Script, another system for writing Khitan, was created in 920. The earliest securely dated surviving small-script text is a 1051 tomb inscription. Traditional accounts credit its design to Yelü Diela and link it to the writing used for Uyghur. Both Khitan scripts drew on Chinese character forms; Jurchen rulers, founders of the Jin dynasty, later adapted Khitan models for their own script. Modern researchers first identified Khitan Small Script tomb inscriptions in 1922.

Why does 𘮒 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
