Khitan Small Script Character 18BA1

𘮡 is a sign in Khitan Small Script, a writing system for the Khitan language. A scholarly reading exists, but it is a historical text sign, not an emoji.

What 𘮡 means

One proposed reading is iú, a sound rather than a translated word.

Khitan Small Script uses signs for whole words and sound signs that usually cluster to spell words; many individual readings remain uncertain.

Tradition credits Yelü Diela and dates the script's creation around 925; a 2026 study questions that timeline. The earliest securely dated surviving text is a 1051 CE tomb inscription. Small and large Khitan scripts coexisted to write the Khitan language; small-script texts survive on tombs, monuments, mirrors, tallies and coins. Chinese forms shaped the design; some accounts link it to Uyghur writing, though the scripts look different. Nearby Jurchen people later adapted Khitan models.
