It carries a reconstructed sound value. Kane’s 2009 index lists 𘰱 as cẻn; the hook over e marks an uncertain vowel. Sound signs often join in word blocks, ordered left to right, then top to bottom.
When was Khitan small script created?
It was made to write Khitan, but its start date is disputed. Tradition credits Yelü Diela around 925; a 2026 reassessment identifies the earliest securely dated surviving inscription as a 1051 epitaph.
Liao, Western Liao, and Jin texts use the script for epitaphs and official writing. Chinese forms shaped its characters; Uyghur writing influenced its phonetics, and Jurchen scripts later adapted Khitan models. Text ran in vertical columns from right to left.

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
