What 𘱂 means
It represents a reconstructed sound, not a full Khitan word.
A 2010 Unicode proposal lists hur for 𘱂. A 2020 study reports a revised reconstruction, hut, from a 2017 Khitan reference book. These are scholarly readings of its sound, not translations; Khitan is only partly deciphered.
Why was the Khitan small script created?
To write Khitan beside a separate large script.
Historical accounts credit Yelü Diela, brother of the Liao dynasty’s founder, with creating it; they say its design drew on Uyghur writing. It was used alongside the Khitan Large Script through the Liao, Western Liao and Jin periods. Tomb epitaphs (inscriptions honoring the dead) are the chief surviving source; sound signs usually cluster to spell words. A Khitan small-script inscription is dated 983.
