Khitan small-script character 18C86

391/471

𘲆 is a sound sign in Khitan small script, the writing system for the historical Khitan language; one 2017 transcription gives its reconstructed value as û. The script's traditional creation date is around 925; its earliest securely dated surviving inscription is from 1051. It was used in the Liao and Jin dynasties until banned in 1191. The Jurchen large script (1119) and small script (1138) drew on both Khitan systems.

What 𘲆 means

It does not translate to a word on its own. In some recorded Khitan words, it alternates with 𘲚 at the start; the written variants keep the same meaning and grammatical role. As of 2026, Khitan small script remains only partly deciphered.

Why does 𘲆 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
