khitan small script character-18c9c

Khitan Small Script character

413/471

𘲜 is a character in Khitan Small Script, used to write the Khitan language; read it as text, not a chat reaction. Burial inscriptions and official records preserve examples. The script remained in use under Jin until a 1191 decree ended it.

What 𘲜 means

It fit Khitan words, which attach grammatical endings.

Created around 925 CE, the small script grouped characters that represented sounds to spell words. The Khitan people of northern China spoke a language that often adds endings to words. The parallel Khitan Large Script relied more on signs for whole words or ideas; Jurchen scripts also adapted Khitan models.

Why does 𘲜 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
