What 𘲛 means
Its exact role in a word is unclear. Khitan writing combines word signs with sound signs, which group into blocks. A horizontal transcription can flatten the historic vertical columns and obscure which signs belong together.
Yelü Diela, younger brother of the Liao ruler, devised Khitan Small Script around 925. Its forms drew on Chinese characters; its sound system was inspired by the Uyghur script used by Turkic peoples farther west. Khitan writing served for records, poems and monuments. The Jurchen-led Jin kept it in official use until an edict ended that use in 1191. Jurchens modeled their own scripts on both Khitan systems; inscriptions were rediscovered in 1922.
