Khitan Small Script Character 18CA5

422/471

𘲥 is one sign in the Khitan small script, a writing system for the Khitan language. Created around 925 CE, it remained in use through the Liao, Western Liao and Jin eras and survives mostly in elite tomb inscriptions. Later Jurchen scripts drew on both Khitan scripts.

What 𘲥 means

The Unicode label identifies the sign, not its reading. Khitan small script paired word signs with groups of sound signs and arranged writing in vertical columns. Historical accounts credit Yelü Diela, the Liao founder's younger brother, with creating it. Its forms drew on Chinese characters; the design is also linked to Uyghur writing, though the scripts look little alike. The label 18CA5 does not reveal which word or sound this sign recorded.
