What 𘲿 means
One scholarly reconstruction gives it the Romanized sound value “pen.”
Khitan Small Script was developed around 925 by Yelü Diela to write the Khitan language. Its forms drew on Chinese characters; a traditional account links its sound-based design to the Uyghur script, an alphabet used farther west. Most surviving texts are stone funerary inscriptions for Khitan royalty and aristocrats.
A 2019 study identifies 1053 as the earliest known dated text and 1175 as the latest example it lists. It also revises an earlier “fen” reading to “pen.” Jin rulers abolished official use of Khitan scripts in 1191; Jurchen scripts also took Khitan models.
