khitan small script character-18cc0

Khitan Numeral Thirty

449/471

𘳀 is the Khitan Small Script numeral 30. A dated inscription uses it as a day number; unlike phonetic signs that group into words, it represents the whole value by itself.

What 𘳀 means

To record the Khitan language.

Yelü Diela is credited with creating the script around 925 CE to record Khitan, a language spoken in northern China. Tradition links its design to Uyghur writing, though the scripts look quite different.

The Small Script worked alongside the distinct Khitan Large Script; both served the same region, period, and functions. Most surviving examples are funerary epitaphs—inscriptions on stone memorials for the dead. It also appears on monuments and objects. A 1091 inscription uses 𘳀 for day thirty.

Why does 𘳀 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
