Khojki Letter Sa

41/65

𑈩 is Khojki sa, a consonant letter for the s sound. In a word it contributes that sound; alone it may identify Khojki, signal a heritage context, or test font support. Khojki grew from merchant writing in Sindh and was adapted for Khoja Ismaili religious literature.

What 𑈩 means

It is the Khojki letter sa, for the s sound.

In a Khojki word, it contributes that consonant; the word supplies the meaning. Alone, it is a letter sample or a clue that identifies the script.

How did Khojki develop?

Khojki grew from Landa, a family of merchant scripts used in Sindh. Some pottery fragments from lower Sindh have been interpreted as evidence of Proto-Nagri, an early script related to Khojki, and dated to the 8th century. Manuscripts attest to Khojki by the 16th century; a surviving ginan manuscript is dated 1736.

Khoja Ismaili communities refined Khojki for Sindhi religious literature, especially ginans, devotional poems. Tradition credits Pir Sadruddin with its invention and spread; historical accounts support his role in refining and promoting the script. Khojki was also used to write Gujarati, Punjabi, Siraiki, related Hindi languages, Arabic, and Persian.

Khojki and Gurmukhi are historically connected through Landa merchant writing, but developed as religious scripts for different communities. During the colonial period, Gujarati and Arabic displaced Khojki regionally.

What does it mean when someone sends 𑈩?

A lone 𑈩 usually identifies a letter, not a whole message.

In an Ismaili heritage post, it can mark Khojki literary or devotional context. Khoja and Ismaili readers may recognize that history where others see an unfamiliar script. Introductory primers in Pakistan and ceremonial use among Nizari Ismaili communities across the diaspora continue as of 2026.

If it appears as a box or blank, the font lacks Khojki support; the display issue does not change the letter.

Literary and heritage register; a lone letter is usually an identifier or display sample.

A box or blank usually means the font lacks Khojki support.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𑈩 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
