What 𑋝 means
It is Khudawadi’s consonant named sa. In Sindhi writing, it belongs inside words rather than standing as a complete message. Khudawadi consonants take dependent vowel signs (marks attached to change their vowel); consonant clusters use a visible virama, a mark that suppresses the consonant’s vowel.
How did Khudawadi script develop?
Khudawadi was standardized from an older merchant form. Its standardized form took shape in the 1860s from older Khudawadi associated with merchant communities around Hyderabad in Sindh, with additional characters from Shikarpuri.
Merchants used it for everyday writing and accounts; the standardized script served education, administration, book printing, and court records. In the late 19th century, an Arabic-based script became official for Sindhi, while Devanagari was also used for Sindhi in India. Khudawadi belongs to Landa, a family of merchant scripts, and is historically related to the Sharada script of South Asia. Khojki is a separate Landa descendant used for religious texts of the Ismaili community.
