Kick scooter

37/50

🛴 is a kick scooter, also called a push scooter: a narrow board on two small wheels with upright handlebars, ridden standing up and pushed along with one foot. People send it for a scooter ride, a quick hop across town or a playful exit, and since there is no separate e-scooter emoji, it covers electric and rental scooters too. The sit-down motor scooter is .

What 🛴 means

A foot-powered scooter you stand on, made for short trips.

A kick scooter has a low footboard, a steering column with a handlebar and two (sometimes three) small wheels. You put one foot on the board, push off the ground with the other and glide. Wooden ones built from roller-skate wheels existed in the early 1900s, but the version the emoji shows comes from the folding aluminium scooter that Swiss inventor Wim Ouboter designed in the 1990s. Sold under the Micro and Razor names, it became a worldwide craze around 2000, and in the United States "Razor" is still used for any kick scooter, the way "Hoover" is for vacuum cleaners.

Two groups ride them most. Small children get a three-wheeled scooter as a first vehicle before a bike, so parents send 🛴 for playground trips and birthday presents. Adults use a folding scooter for the last stretch of a commute, because it carries onto a train or under a desk. Since about 2017, rental electric scooters parked on city pavements have made the stand-up scooter an everyday adult vehicle in many countries, and the emoji travelled with it: as of 2026 there is still no dedicated e-scooter emoji, so 🛴 does that job as well.

What does 🛴 mean when someone sends it?

Usually "I'm coming by scooter" or "let's go for a ride".

After "where are you?" or "how are you getting here?", 🛴 answers the transport question, the way or would. Beside a time or a place it proposes a scooter outing, often with children. Next to "I'm off" or "bye" it is a comic exit, picturing someone pushing away on a toy; add and the joke is complete.

In adult chats about cities, 🛴 stands for e-scooters and all the arguments around them: rental fleets, pavement clutter, helmet rules and bans. Paris voted in 2023 to remove its rental e-scooters, and news and debate about such rules commonly carry the emoji. If the motor matters, the words or a or beside it will say so; the picture alone never does.

The main misreading comes from the word "scooter" itself. In British and American English it can also mean a Vespa-style motor scooter or an elderly person's mobility scooter. Neither is this emoji: the Vespa type is , with a seat and a rider sitting down, and there is no mobility-scooter emoji at all.

Casual, literal and a little childlike; it fits family chats, commute plans and jokes, not formal writing.

It is not a Vespa or a mobility scooter; readers who hear "scooter" and picture a seat want .

Drift: Encoded in 2016 as a children's and commuter toy, it became the stand-in for rental and electric scooters once shared e-scooter fleets spread through cities from about 2017. (as of 2026)

Worth knowing

  • Wim Ouboter said he built the folding scooter because his favourite sausage stand in Zurich was too far to walk and too close to bother with a bike.
  • Unicode's shortcode :scooter: belongs to this stand-up scooter; the seated Vespa type is :motor_scooter:, which trips up anyone typing "scooter" and expecting a seat.
