What means
Its current form reflects several revisions to earlier writing.
The script's history goes back to Sumhung Lipi, which Tika Ram Rai devised in the 1920s for Sumhung, a religious Rai book. Kripasalyan Rai reintroduced it in 1969; a 2000 redesign adjusted the script for Bantawa spelling, sounds, and printing.
A 2015 study says Rai number words were widely used before dedicated numerals; it describes the ten-symbol set as decimal, positional, and influenced by Brahmi, an early South Asian writing system. A 2022 Unicode proposal documents the script in Bantawa primers, newspapers, literature, and Sikkim assembly proceedings translated into Bantawa.
