What ⎡ means
⎡ starts the left side of a tall square bracket. To enter this exact bracket corner, use your editor’s character map or Unicode input method; the ordinary [ key inserts a different character. In typeset maths, it can frame a multiline matrix or other structured text when joined to a vertical extension and a lower corner.
On its own, ⎡ reads as an unfinished bracket or a stray character, not ordinary punctuation. Matching right-side corners and extensions make the other side of the tall bracket.
A technical typesetting character; by itself, it reads as a bracket fragment rather than ordinary punctuation.
Use [ for ordinary punctuation; ⎡ is only a tall bracket’s upper corner.

1Why does ⎡ show as a box?
The font in use may not include ⎡, so it can display as a missing-character box. A font with broader mathematical-symbol coverage may show it.
