What ᱈ means
It is the digit eight in Lepcha writing. Lepcha, also known as Rong, has its own numeral set. In longer numbers, a digit’s position affects the value it contributes.
The Lepcha script is used to write the Lepcha language and descends directly from Tibetan writing. Its Tibetan precursor was a cursive form written in vertical columns; the Lepcha script turned that model sideways and laid it out from left to right. It is thought to have been created around 1720 CE by Sikkim king Chakdor Namgyal.
If you use Word on Windows, type 1C48, then press AltX.
How does ᱈ work in a number?
Its position sets the value it contributes. Lepcha has vigesimal numbers, which count by twenties, and decimal numbers. A decimal number table gives ᱈᱀ as 80; ᱀ is zero, so read the two digits together.
A box means the font lacks Lepcha coverage
A box points to missing font coverage; typing requires an input method.
A box means the selected font does not include a Lepcha glyph. As of 2026, SIL’s Mingzat font covers the full Lepcha block, and SIL’s phonetic Lepcha keyboard supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and mobile.
As of 2026, hexadecimal entry is documented as follows: in Word on Windows, type 1C48 and press AltX; in Linux GTK, press CtrlShiftU, type 1C48, then press Space or Enter; on macOS, enable Unicode Hex Input, hold Option, and type 1C48.
Neutral: it is used as a numeral in Lepcha writing.
If it appears as a box, check the font before changing the character.
