What ᱃ means
It is the digit 3, not a speech sound.
Lepcha manuscripts include calculation books, astrology, Tibetan-adapted texts and works rooted in Lepcha traditions.
What is the history of the Lepcha script?
The script adapts Tibetan forms for left-to-right writing.
Earlier Tibetan forms ran in vertical columns; Lepcha turned them a quarter-turn. One account places its development around 1720 CE under Sikkim king Chakdor Namgyal; Lepcha tradition credits Thikúng Mensalóng, while a Tibetan tradition credits Buddhist teacher Lhatsun Chenpo.
The oldest identified handwritten materials date to the second half of the nineteenth century. As of 2026, Mingzat and Noto Sans Lepcha support Lepcha; missing Lepcha font coverage can leave ᱃ as a box.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᱃ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
