What ᱏ means
Use a Unicode Lepcha keyboard; enter Dda as one character.
On a phonetic Unicode Lepcha layout, Dda has a single-letter input. Lepcha vowel and final marks may be entered after a base letter but display around it; the app and font need complex-script shaping support or correctly encoded text may look misplaced.
What sound does Lepcha Dda represent?
It represents a voiced retroflex D.
A retroflex D is made with the tongue tip curled slightly back; voiced means the vocal cords vibrate. Lepcha writing developed around 1720 from Tibetan dbu-med, a cursive style of Tibetan script. Early Lepcha writing ran in vertical columns before shifting to horizontal lines.
Accounts credit the script's creation to Chakdor Namgyal, Thikúng Mensalóng, or Lhatsun Chenpo. Writing gave Lepcha (Rong) a way to record its language. Its literature includes stories, poetry, fiction, prayers, and religious works, and has also supported cultural revival. Some manuscripts bring traditional Lepcha beliefs together with Tibetan Buddhist values; Lepcha communities include Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, and traditional religious traditions.
