What ᰑ means

It marks the consonant labeled fa in a Lepcha syllable. Lepcha is a language written with its own script; fa is the Latin-letter label used in romanization, a way of writing Lepcha with Latin letters. The letter is one part of a syllable, not a whole word.

Lepcha consonant letters normally include an unstated vowel. Other signs change that vowel, while separate marks show a consonant at the end of a syllable. The vowel signs -i, -o, and -oo are stored after the consonant but display on its left; -e displays below.

The script’s origin is debated.

The origin story is contested. One account places the script’s development around 1720 and credits Sikkim king Chakdor Namgyal; other accounts credit Thikung Mensalong or Lama Latsun Chempo. A manuscript cited in the Unicode encoding record is dated c. 1800.

Lepcha script derives directly from Tibetan writing. An earlier model’s vertical columns were reorganized into horizontal lines running left to right, and Lepcha added its own marks for final consonants.

Lepcha writing appears in varied settings: early works include Buddhist adaptations alongside indigenous beliefs, while manuscript descriptions from Darjeeling mention alphabet lessons, correspondence, stories, prayers, moral teaching, and astrology. A 2023-2024 school syllabus includes formal Lepcha reading, writing, grammar, and literature courses in Sikkim.

Is this fa, pha, or fla?

It is fa; pha and fla are separate letters. In the Lepcha consonant inventory, ᰐ is labeled pha and ᰒ is labeled fla. These Latin-letter labels identify different forms, so use ᰑ when the romanization says fa.

It belongs in written Lepcha words, where it marks part of a syllable.

Do not substitute ᰐ (pha) or ᰒ (fla); they are different letters.
