What does ᰃ mean in Lepcha?
It marks the ga consonant base in Lepcha writing. In the Library of Congress system for representing Lepcha with Latin letters, its consonant is written g; the bare base also includes a built-in vowel. Added vowel and consonant signs spell out the rest of the syllable.
The script's origin is usually placed around 1720. Lepcha tradition credits its creation to Thikúng Mensalóng. It was devised to write the Lepcha language. Lazóng is a recitation-based teaching tradition that teaches letter and syllable values; Lepcha literature includes religious texts.
By 2015, Lepcha manuscripts were documented with religious texts that blend local beliefs with Tibetan Buddhist values; the blend reflects adaptation rather than simply copying Tibetan originals. Older Tibetan letterforms were turned 90 counterclockwise into the horizontal Lepcha script, and added signs mark final consonants. Early Lepcha manuscripts used vertical columns; later writing ran horizontally. The oldest identified handwritten Lepcha materials date from the second half of the nineteenth century.
Why does Lepcha text render wrong?
The font and shaping engine must support Lepcha signs. The shaping engine is software that positions signs around letters. Unicode stores dependent vowel signs after the base, but signs for i, o and oo can appear to its left; the e sign appears below it.
A font without the needed OpenType shaping rules may place those marks incorrectly. The character order in the text stays the same; only the displayed layout changes.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᰃ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
