Lepcha letter HLA

31/74

ᰞ is Lepcha’s letter for the HLA consonant cluster, written as one character. It normally appears inside Lepcha words; alone, it has no separate word meaning. Vowel signs can display on a different side from where they are encoded, so an odd-looking arrangement may be a shaping issue.

What ᰞ means

ᰞ marks a consonant cluster, with l following the first consonant.

In Lepcha, also called Róng, that HLA value belongs to one dedicated letter. By itself, the letter names no word or idea.

Lepcha encodes the cluster as a letter in its own right, not as a sequence of separate characters.

Why was the Lepcha script created?

It formed to carry Buddhist texts into Lepcha.

The script’s main formation is placed around 1720. Lepcha tradition credits Thikúng Mensalóng; other accounts attribute it to Chakdor Namgyal, king of Sikkim. Buddhist missionary work and translating Buddhist texts into Lepcha are linked to its development.

Lepcha letterforms draw directly on Tibetan writing. The Tibetan form from which Lepcha developed ran in vertical columns; Lepcha shifted to left-to-right lines. It added final-consonant signs and dedicated letters for consonant clusters with medial l, including HLA. Later manuscripts mix Tibetan Buddhist material with Lepcha beliefs, and the script also carried stories, prayers, poetry, and school texts. The oldest identified surviving handwritten materials date to the second half of the nineteenth century. The first printed Lepcha text came earlier, in 1845: a translation of the Gospel of Matthew, a book of the Christian Bible.

How do I type and display Lepcha HLA?

Use a phonetic Lepcha keyboard and a shaping-capable font.

On a phonetic Unicode Lepcha keyboard, enter the romanized Lepcha letter sequence; exact keys depend on the layout.

Some Lepcha vowel signs are encoded after their consonant but display to its left. If ᰞ is missing or nearby marks shift unexpectedly, check for a Lepcha-capable font and text app with OpenType shaping support.

Why does ᰞ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Lepcha block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
