lepcha letter va

Lepcha Letter Va

32/74

In Lepcha writing (Lepcha is also called Róng), ᰟ is the letter va: it represents a v-like consonant followed by the script’s built-in a vowel. A following vowel sign changes that vowel, while other signs can close the syllable. Lepcha writing carries both Buddhist translations and Lepcha stories, beliefs, and ritual texts.

What ᰟ means

It writes a v sound with Lepcha’s built-in a vowel.

The plain letter forms the syllable va. A dependent vowel sign changes that vowel; separate final-consonant signs can close the syllable.

Why was the Lepcha script made?

It developed as a writing system for Lepcha literature and religious texts.

The surviving Lepcha literary tradition dates to the eighteenth century. The script’s spelling conventions are associated with Chador Namgyal’s reign as ruler of Sikkim, 1700–1716. Lepcha tradition credits Thikúng Mensalóng; Tibetan tradition credits the Buddhist teacher Lama Lhatsun Chenpo. These accounts leave room for shared work rather than establishing one certain inventor.

Buddhist missionary activity and the translation of Tibetan Buddhist works helped shape the script. Those works sit alongside Lepcha texts on beliefs, stories, prayers, legends, moral teaching, astrology, and ritual. Sikkim recognized Lepcha as an official language in 1977, and textbooks later helped bring it into formal schooling.

How do I type ᰟ?

A phonetic Lepcha keyboard suits words; a character picker suits one letter.

On desktop, use a character picker to insert ᰟ without a Lepcha layout: Character Map on Windows, Character Viewer on macOS, or a character-map tool on Linux.

Phonetic Unicode Lepcha keyboard layouts are listed for Linux, macOS, Windows, and mobile as of 2026. In multi-sign syllables, input order can differ from display: some vowel signs appear left of the consonant, while final-consonant signs can appear above or left. A Lepcha-capable font and shaping engine arrange those signs correctly.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ᰟ show as a box?

If you see a box instead of the letter, the active font lacks Lepcha coverage. That display problem does not change the character encoded in the text.
