lisu letter dza

Lisu letter dza

13/48

ꓜ is the Lisu dza letter for a “dz” consonant, with an inherent open “ah” vowel when no other vowel is written—so on its own it reads roughly “dza.” It belongs inside Lisu spelling; sent alone, take it first as a letter or script sample, then ask if context is unclear.

What ꓜ means

It marks the consonant at a Lisu syllable’s start.

The Lisu dza letter belongs to Old Lisu, also called the Fraser script. It supplies the opening consonant of a syllable. If no vowel is written after it, the letter also carries an inherent open “ah” vowel, so it is read roughly as “dza”; when a written vowel follows, that vowel supplies the syllable’s vowel.

Ba Thaw developed Old Lisu in 1908–1914 by adapting Latin letter shapes; James O. Fraser and Lisu pastors revised the script later. In the early twentieth century, it served literacy and Christian publishing, including primers, Bibles, hymnbooks, and commentaries; an early Lisu primer and catechism appeared c. 1917. Its use later broadened to education, publishing, broadcasting, media, and religion, alongside romanized Lisu writing. The script’s turned letter shapes reflect Latin models, while punctuation-based tone marks show Burmese influence.

What if someone sends ꓜ alone?

Read it first as a letter sample, not a clear reaction. A single letter does not reveal the sender’s intent. Ask whether they mean the character, Lisu writing, or a display test; use the surrounding message to decide.

A reader familiar with Lisu writing will recognize a consonant; someone unfamiliar may take its Latin-like turned shape for decoration. ꓜ is a Lisu letter, not a variant of Latin Z.

In Lisu writing, it is an ordinary letter; outside that setting, it reads as a specialist-script reference or decorative text.

Do not substitute it for Latin Z: ꓜ is a Lisu letter.
