lisu letter ga

Lisu letter ga

7/48

ꓖ is a Lisu letter in the Fraser (Old Lisu) script; in spelling it represents ga, with an inherent a vowel that a following vowel can change. The script began in Lisu Christian literacy and Bible translation, then spread through education and public life. Alone, ꓖ gives too little context to read as a reaction.

What ꓖ means

It is the Lisu consonant letter ga, carrying an inherent a vowel.

A following vowel letter changes that vowel, and a tone mark comes after the syllable. The mark is part of Lisu spelling and records the syllable’s tone.

Between 1908-1914, Karen evangelist Ba Thaw adapted Latin shapes; James O. Fraser and Lisu Christian clergy revised the script. It served Christian literacy and Bible translation, then education, media, administration and religious life. A pinyin-based Lisu orthography, devised in China in 1956-1958, served especially non-Christian users. Fraser script became a government standard in two Lisu autonomous areas in 1983 and gained official recognition in China in 1992. Pollard Miao and Latin-based writing for Lahu and Wa arose in a similar missionary-era setting; that is a parallel, not descent. These paths gave the two Lisu orthographies different community associations.

What does ꓖ mean if someone sends it alone?

A lone ꓖ is not enough to infer a social meaning. It could be a letter sample, a syllable, or an incomplete fragment. Ask for the surrounding sentence and language.

Why does ꓖ look like a Latin letter?

The resemblance is real; ꓖ belongs to Lisu. Lisu uses this as one letter form; Latin writes a case pair, G and g. Latin G is a lookalike, while ꓖ is a separate character with Lisu spelling rules.

Traditional electronic Lisu is sans serif. If ꓖ appears as a blank box or substitute glyph, the font may lack Lisu coverage.

Expect ꓖ in Lisu-language writing, alphabet charts, language-learning material, and historical or religious texts.
