Malayalam Letter O

It marks Malayalam’s short “o” sound. Malayalam short o begins words such as ഒട്ടകം (“camel”), ഒന്ന് (“one”), and ഒപ്പ് (“signature”). When a syllable begins with a consonant, its vowel is written with the dependent sign ൊ, as in കൊ.

ഓ is the long-o counterpart, not a stylistic alternative. The word’s spelling determines which vowel belongs there.

Why does Malayalam O look different in old texts?

Malayalam writing grew through related script traditions. The Vāḻapaḷḷi inscription, engraved on a copper plate, is dated c. 882/83 CE in one catalog and AD 832 in another account. It uses Vattezhuthu, also called Round writing, with some Grantha letters. Those dates show early Malayalam writing, not the first use of this exact modern letter shape.

Vattezhuthu served Malayalam and Tamil; Arya or Grantha writing later entered literary Malayalam because it could represent Sanskrit sounds and loanwords. Printing favored Arya forms, and the first Malayalam book appeared in Rome in 1772. A grammar published in 1868 described short o as a Malayalam vowel absent from Sanskrit’s vowel inventory.

How do I type the Malayalam O?

Use a Malayalam phonetic IME or the Malayalam INSCRIPT keyboard layout. On Windows, Malayalam Phonetic turns Latin transliteration into candidate text, while INSCRIPT uses a fixed key-to-letter layout. The Latin o key is not a universal shortcut.

Use independent letter ഒ when a syllable begins with the vowel and dependent sign ൊ after a consonant. The dependent sign is one Unicode character; its written parts appear on both sides of the consonant.
