What does ಒ mean?
It is Kannada’s independent short-o vowel.
ಒ is used when a syllable begins with the o vowel. It is a letter within a Kannada-script word, rather than a standalone word.
After a consonant, the Kannada vowel sign o ೊ marks the same vowel, as in ಕೊ. This sign has multiple parts, so a font may draw them around the consonant even though the text stores the consonant first.
Where did Kannada script come from?
Kannada script developed from Brahmi through regional South Indian forms.
The Halmidi stone inscription, around 450 CE, is a conventional early anchor for Kannada writing. It shows the script in use, not the birth date of this individual letter.
Inscriptions served as public records: over time, elite records in Prakrit and Sanskrit gave way to Kannada public records. Kannada script is also used to write Tulu. The Telugu script became distinct by the 13th century CE.
