What ఒ means
Choose the short-o result in a Telugu input method. Phonetic entry turns Latin-letter typing into suggestions, so select the intended independent vowel instead of assuming the first match is right. For a fixed-key layout, switch to Telugu InScript and use its assigned vowel key; the English o key is not universal.
What does the Telugu letter o mean?
It writes Telugu’s short o vowel. This independent vowel can stand alone at the start of a syllable; after a consonant, the same vowel is written with a dependent sign. In కొ, consonant క carries that sign. It is a spelling unit, not a word on its own.
Telugu writing grew from Brahmi, an ancient South Asian writing system, through a period when Telugu and Kannada forms shared a script tradition. Early Telugu-Kannada forms appear in inscriptions from the 4th–7th century CE; Telugu-language inscriptions begin in the 6th or 7th century CE. Inscriptions recorded political, religious, and economic affairs. Telugu and Kannada later developed into distinct scripts.
Why does the Telugu o look different after a consonant?
The dependent vowel sign is shaped around its consonant. A 2014 technical description of how Telugu fonts arrange vowel signs documents the short-o sign in one-part and two-part forms. The two-part form can appear after ఘ, ఝ, మ, and య. These are display forms of the same vowel sign.
In Telugu spelling, it marks the short o vowel.
Do not substitute ఓ for ఒ: the former is long o.

1Why does ఒ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
