What ࡑ means

It marks the emphatic s consonant, distinct from plain s. Scholars conventionally transliterate Asz as ṣ, an s with a dot below. The z in the Latin-letter label is a naming convention, not an added sound. Asz belongs inside Mandaic words; it has no standalone message meaning.

Classical Mandaic is the liturgical form of the Aramaic language used by Mandaeans, a religious community rooted in southern Mesopotamia. The script's origin is uncertain: it developed between the second and seventh centuries CE from cursive Aramaic or the script used in Parthian royal offices; one proposal places its beginning in the second century CE. Its alphabet is also connected with Elymaean rock inscriptions and coin inscriptions from Elymais and Characene dated to the 2nd–3rd centuries CE.

The early record includes Mandaic incantations, or ritual formulas, on rolled lead sheets and fired-clay bowls; some lead rolls predate bowls generally dated 600–800 CE. Pre-Classical incantations date to the 4th–7th centuries CE; Classical religious literature and astronomical omens appear from the 7th–8th centuries onward. Neo-Mandaic is the modern spoken variety; As of 2026, it is generally unwritten, though some personal letters and manuscript notes use a modified Classical script. In the Mandaean manuscript tradition, magical texts sometimes begin with the alphabet because writing itself was treated as sacred, magical work.

Why does ࡑ join other letters?

Its form changes with its neighboring letters. Mandaic is written from right to left, and Asz joins to letters on both sides. Its shape can differ when it stands alone or at the beginning, middle, or end of a word; the letter stays the same.

Pre-Classical clay and metal inscriptions can show ṣ as a downward stroke that does not connect on its right; standard manuscripts use more consistent forms. This is a historical writing-style difference, not a separate character.

Why does ࡑ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
