ࡐ is the Mandaic letter pa, which represents the p sound, as in “pin.” It appears inside words in a right-to-left alphabet used for Mandaean texts, including liturgy. Its shape joins neighboring letters, and a mark below it can change the sound to f, as in “fan.”

Text symbol

What ࡐ means

It represents the p sound, as in “pin.” In Mandaic alphabet descriptions, it is called pa. The Mandaic script runs right to left, and this letter writes a sound inside a word.

The Mandaean community developed the script to write Classical Mandaic, especially for liturgy. Its letter order continues the older sequence used by Aramaic scripts. Scholars connect its forms with writing in Elymais and Characene, two ancient regions where official Parthian-era handwriting influenced local scripts.

Why does Mandaic pa change shape?

Neighboring letters change its shape when it joins a word. Mandaic runs right to left, and pa joins on both sides. Its isolated, right-joined, joined-on-both-sides, and left-joined forms can look different while representing the same letter.

A small sound mark below it, called the affrication mark, changes the reading from the p in “pin” to the f in “fan.” The marked form is shown in ࡐ࡙.

The oldest magical texts are dated to the third or fourth centuries CE; early documents include incantations—written formulas—on lead rolls and terracotta bowls. The script’s origin is debated: one account places its emergence around the 2nd century CE; others allow development between the second and seventh centuries CE from cursive Aramaic or official Parthian-era writing.

Mandaic is a sacred script in Mandaean tradition, and this is one alphabetic letter used in liturgical writing.

An isolated ࡐ is one letter, not a complete Mandaean religious message.
