What ࡗ means

It links a clause to time or comparison.

In Classical Mandaic, kad can mean “when,” “as,” or “like.” Modern Mandaic descriptions record a related ke form and the loss of an older relative prefix d-; these are changes in the surrounding grammar, not a new meaning for the letter.

Mandaic script origins: comparative work places the script’s formation in the second century CE. Unicode describes its development between the second and seventh centuries CE from cursive Aramaic or Parthian administrative writing. Its documented relatives include Elymaean and Characene scripts through that Parthian-influenced network. Mandaic writing served Mandaean religious texts; early surviving evidence includes incantations—written spells—on lead and clay objects from the third or fourth centuries CE.

Mandaic letter kad ligature: one glyph or two?

The one-glyph and two-character forms encode the same word.

The single glyph ࡗ is the traditional kḏ ligature. The sequence ࡊࡖ spells it with AK followed by Dushenna. Fonts can make them look alike, but search and text-processing tools can distinguish the underlying strings.

In Mandaic, ࡊ is AK and ࡖ is Dushenna; together they are the component spelling corresponding to the single ligature ࡗ. The choice changes the text representation, not kad’s grammatical role.

Don't confuse it with

1
ࡊࡖ
This two-character spelling uses AK followed by Dushenna. It can look like the single glyph ࡗ, but text tools may treat the strings as distinct.

Why does ࡗ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
