Marchen Letter Nya

10/68

𑱹 is the Marchen consonant letter Nya, from a Bön script used to write historic Zhangzhung and Tibetan. Its shape incorporates a left-facing svasti, a Bön religious motif. Treat it as a letter within Marchen text; the standalone Tibetan svasti is a separate sign.

What 𑱹 means

It is the consonant letter Nya in the Marchen script.

Marchen is a script used in Bön, a Tibetan religious tradition, to write Zhangzhung, a historic language, and Tibetan. The Zhangzhung word smar means “good,” “happy,” or “beautiful”; the script’s name is rendered “Greater Beautiful Script.”

Accounts differ on its beginnings: one tradition traces Marchen to ancient Zhangzhung before Buddhism reached Tibet around the 7th century; another account traces its development from Tibetan around the 7th century and records Zhangzhung use until around the 10th century. Premodern examples are scarce; an early one is a Zhangzhung inscription on a bronze seal held at Menri Monastery. Other Bön-associated scripts include Marchung, Pungchen, Pungchung, and Drusha; they are historically related scripts, not forms of Marchen. The script also appears in Bön literature and architectural inscriptions.

Why does 𑱹 look like a svasti?

Its design incorporates a left-facing Bön svasti motif.

A svasti is a religious symbol; here it forms part of a letter, not a standalone sign. The Tibetan left-facing svasti sign is a separate character.

The same svasti motif appears in Marchen Head Mark 𑱰, a punctuation mark. Marchen differs from Tibetan and Lantsa, a script used in Tibetan settings to write Sanskrit; its subjoined Wa, Ya, and Ra—the smaller forms placed below another consonant in a stack—are the documented exceptions, resembling their Tibetan counterparts.

A specialist character for Marchen, especially Bön writing and historical-script contexts.

If you mean the standalone Tibetan svasti, this is a different character: 𑱹 is a letter.

Why does 𑱹 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Marchen block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
