What 𝓤 means
In math, 𝓤 is a bold-script capital U. Its exact referent is chosen by the author; the symbol has no universal meaning on its own.
A script U in math can name a particular object because its style belongs to the notation, not just decoration.
Mathematical typesetting used letter styles to distinguish symbols before they were encoded as text characters. A consolidated proposal in 2000 followed a several-year review involving the STIX project and mathematical publishers. Unicode 3.1 added the mathematical alphabet in 2001, extending an earlier, smaller set of math-styled letters.
Will NFKC turn 𝓤 into U?
NFKC can reduce it to ordinary U. That compatibility mapping is useful only when a system intentionally ignores mathematical style. It erases the distinction, so preserve 𝓤 in formulas or data where style carries meaning; NFC leaves it unchanged.
Why does 𝓤 look different across fonts?
The outline depends on the math font. Unicode defines the character, not one mandatory drawing. A math renderer can preserve style differences only when the needed glyphs are available.
Use it in formulas where the bold-script distinction matters; in ordinary prose, it is a special character, not formatting on U.
Styled mathematical characters can disrupt ordinary text search and restyling.

1Why does 𝓤 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
