What 𝓢 means
In Word, enter 1D4E2 and press Alt+X; in unicode-math, use \mathbfscr{S}.
Word converts that hexadecimal character code. The LaTeX command chooses a math alphabet inside an equation, where its style can distinguish this S from plain S.
What does 𝓢 mean?
It has no fixed meaning; the author defines it in each formula.
Script and bold-script alphabets were already used in mathematical and scientific publishing before their digital encoding. In 1999, a proposal by the Scientific and Technical Information Exchange (STIX), a collaboration of scientific publishers, asked to encode those styles as separate letters so plain-text formulas would retain their meanings.
Plain S and 𝓢 can name different variables in one formula. Read what 𝓢 stands for from the formula or its surrounding explanation; it is not a universal label.
Why does 𝓢 look different in some fonts?
Its exact calligraphic drawing depends on the font.
The Unicode chart shows roundhand script, while math fonts may draw script in chancery, a more angled pen-written style. Unicode 18.0 defines no variation selector for bold script, so the font determines this character’s exact shape.

1Why does 𝓢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
