What 𝒮 means
It has no universal definition; each formula assigns its role.
Letters represented quantities in Greek antiquity. In 1591, French mathematician François Viète used capitals for unknowns and constants. The STIX scientific-publishing project argued in 1999 that math styles needed separate plain-text characters because they can distinguish variables.
Unicode 18.0.0 says math fonts may default to chancery or roundhand, two calligraphic styles. Since Unicode 14.0, an invisible selector after the letter can request chancery (U+FE00) or roundhand (U+FE01).
Use it as a mathematical identifier, not as decoration in ordinary prose.
Unicode compatibility normalization (NFKC) can fold it to plain S, erasing a formula distinction.

1Why does 𝒮 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
