What 𝓼 means
Its style marks a distinct symbol; the formula supplies its meaning.
This form belongs to an alphabet of letter styles used in formulas. Writers use different styles to keep variables or mathematical objects visually separate; the style alone does not assign 𝓼 a fixed value.
By 1999, the publisher-led STIX project had helped win Unicode acceptance for mathematical alphabets already used in technical publishing. The project aimed to make mathematical symbols and letter styles easier to share across documents and fonts. This carried a typesetting tradition into distinct text characters; it did not give 𝓼 one universal definition.
Is 𝓼 just a styled s?
No. 𝓼 is a separate mathematical character, not a formatting switch.
Mathematical fonts may draw its script curves differently, but the encoded character stays the same. In a formula, that style can distinguish it from plain s.
Unicode describes using these alphabets to imitate formatted prose as an unintended side effect. For regular text, actual font styling is easier to search and restyle than swapping ordinary letters for math characters.

1Questions people ask
2Why does 𝓼 become plain s?
Unicode compatibility normalization called NFKC can map 𝓼 to plain Latin s, deliberately dropping its mathematical style. This happens only when software applies that normalization; a font change alters how it looks, not the stored character.
Does bold script s always mean a vector?
No. Bold letters can mark vectors in physics or engineering, but that does not give bold script 𝓼 a fixed meaning; its formula defines it.
How to type 𝓼
𝓼\1D4FCCodes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
